Elizabeth Braun on The Vampire Diaries

There are a lot of Vampire Diaries fans who would die for a chance to hit the dance floor with Stefan. Well, actress Elizabeth Braun was lucky enough to do just that when she appeared as the Waitress in the “I Went to the Woods” episode.

You might recognize Elizabeth from her role in Lifetime’s musical comedy movie, Holiday High School Reunion; and kids will know her voice from the theme song to Hallmark’s remake of the animated series, Rainbow Brite. Elizabeth’s also appeared on NBC’s Prime Suspect, CBS’s CSI: NY, and several indie comedy films.

I recently caught up with Elizabeth Braun to find out more about her bloody-good time on The Vampire Diaries.

Q: Tell us about your role on CW’s The Vampire Diaries?

ELIZABETH: I play an unlucky waitress in a southern roadhouse barbecue joint who falls victim to a sadistic vampire. Stefan’s body is possessed by an evil vampire named Ambrose who compels my character to wait on him and offer “refills” from my wrist. Damon finally realizes something is wrong with his brother after he observes Stefan suck blood from my neck and eventually drain me completely. And as if that wasn’t disturbing enough, he then “dances” with my lifeless body and throws me to the ground like a ragdoll. Poor thing. It’s a really horrible way to go… but hey, at least I’m not waiting tables anymore!

Q: Was it as gory in-person as it looked on TV?

ELIZABETH: Are you kidding? It was worse. We went through 3 full pints of blood, but the director Julie Plec was kind enough to have krafty bring me juice and cookies to help stabilize my blood sugar… so that was really nice. But other than that, it was honestly more technical than anything. The timing had to be right and my body had to be positioned in some awkward ways. Like the moment when I’m being dipped, I’m in a really deep backbend and had to support my own weight while making sure we stayed in frame (which in itself is a challenge), but I also had to look dead at the same time. They don’t teach that in drama school. Thank God for yoga!

Q: How was it working on such a fan-favorite show?

ELIZABETH: I had so much fun. But I must admit I was a bit intimidated at first since “The Vampire Diaries” has such a huge, intensely loyal fanbase – with a very strong social media presence I might add. But they’ve all been really nice and supportive even though I don’t actually believe in vampires. And they haven’t been judgmental toward me for not trying to steal any of Ian Somerhalder’s hair – they’re a really open-minded, tolerant group of people. I think we could all learn a lot from them.

Q: Anything surprise you about the show or your fellow cast mates?

ELIZABETH: Every show has a different energy and rhythm on set. And on a show like “The Vampire Diaries”, I mean it’s in its seventh season so these guys have been working together forever. So when you come in as a guest, it can sometimes feel like you’re the new kid in a new school… you just kind of have to go with the flow and do your job. But I was appreciative of how amiable the crew was – especially Ian Sommerhalder. I really enjoyed working with him. He’s a good actor, but more importantly, he’s a good dude. We shot that moment where I deadfall to the ground at least a billion times and between takes, Ian would quickly cross the stage to help me up. He was very kind.

Q: What’s the biggest lesson you took away from the opportunity?

ELIZABETH: You never know how an experience or a relationship will come back around, so be nice to everyone – #warning.

Fake blood is sticky and can sometimes stain. If you don’t use pads, you’ll leave with bruises. And if you twist the tab around on your can of Diet Coke, it will help keep your straw from floating away. That right there, the Diet Coke lesson, that’s the biggest lesson.

Q: What else is coming up for you in the near future?

ELIZABETH: Right now I’m having a great time working a romantic comedy script and focusing on improv – it’s such a blast.

I’m definitely open to more dramatic roles that may come my way, but I really see my career steering more into comedy. Heading back to UCB folks! Other than that, have lots of fun travel plans and weddings to go to this summer. But the best news is that I’m a new aunt! Yay! Excited to hang out with my new baby niece and get to know her before she’s in junior high and hates us all. Yay! It’s going to be a really great summer.

Thanks for watching me on The Vampire Diaries!

Hey guys!  Just wanted to quickly give a BIG BLOODY THANK YOU to all of you for watching my CW debut on The Vampire Diaries!  I really appreciate all the love – your sweet messages on Facebook and Twitter are greatly appreciated.  So… THANK YOU!

And as for the rest of you… those of you who missed it – HOW COULD YOU?!

No, I’m kidding.  Honestly, I completely understand.  You’re not all in the target demographic and The Vampire Diaries isn’t for everyone.  I mean, my parents didn’t even watch it.  I’m serious, they really didn’t.  Can you believe that?!  I guess you’ve made it when your parents aren’t even interested in seeing you on network TV anymore… so I should probably just take it as a compliment. (Apparently there was some issue with Time Warner Cable that day…. okay, surrre.)  BUT, for those of you who missed it and do actually love me – there’s still hope!

The Vampire Diaries ep 17 “I Went to the Woods” is now streaming on Hulu!

If you missed the episode (or are dying to channel your inner 14 year-old girl and watch it again), no worries!  You can catch me on THE VAMPIRE DIARIES episode 17 “I Went To The Woods” for free here on The CW website (look under “latest episodes”) and you can also find it now streaming on Hulu as well… my scenes happen about a third of the way in.

AND for the quick Cliff Notes version, you can check out my edited scenes here!

And if you’re not interested in seeing any of it but want to successfully fake like you did… check out the Press Release that went out here!

Otherwise, the basic gist is this…

I play an unlucky waitress in a southern roadhouse barbecue joint who falls victim to a sadistic vampire who “compels” my character to wait on him and offer “refills” from my wrist… he later sucks blood from my neck and eventually drains me completely.  And as if that wasn’t disturbing enough, he then “dances” with my lifeless body – flinging and dipping me around – and then throws me to the ground like a ragdoll.  Poor thing.  It’s a really horrible way to go… but hey, at least she’s not waiting tables anymore!

Thanks again for all the love and support!  More fun news to come!  Cheers!
